Encouraging small changes to boost lunchtime habits

We are encouraging local people to make small changes to your lunchtime habits as part of our latest healthy eating campaign ‘Lunchtime is Back’.

We are focusing our attention on lunchtime choices and reminding people that taking simple steps such as incorporating a piece of fruit or just going for a short walk, can be enough to make significant improvements to your overall health and wellbeing.

Taking time to enjoy a full lunch break can help you lower your blood pressure; reduce stress levels and successfully manage your weight. It can also help you to think more clearly and give you more energy, ready for the afternoon ahead.

Heather Osborn, one of our dietitians said: “It is easy to consume more calories than we anticipate at lunchtime, as many of us will simply grab something on the go. Unfortunately this can often lead to poor food choices which may result in weight gain. We want to encourage people to take a few moments to think about their lunchtime choices, which could help them make positive changes to improve their health.”

Heather recommends the following tips to ensure a healthier lunchtime:

- Try to base your lunchtime meal around starchy carbohydrates (such as bread, rice, potatoes, or pasta) to keep your energy levels up. Whole wheat varieties will keep you fuller for longer and reduce the need to snack.

- Include some regular exercise at lunchtime. A short walk or some simple stretches can help you re-energise and prepare you for the afternoon.

- Make sure you remain fully hydrated. Drinking 6-8 glasses of water per day can reduce tiredness and prevent headaches.

- Include a piece of fruit within your lunchbox. Adding salad vegetables to sandwiches or wraps can help ensure you achieve your five-a-day recommended portions.

- If you do buy your lunch, look at the nutritional information on the packet. For ready-made sandwiches, aim for 280 kcals per pack or less. For snacks, aim for those which are less than 3g fat, and less than 8g of sugar per serving.
