Brilliant weight management programme praised by 16 year old Jessie

A 16 year old girl has praised our Alive ‘N’ Kicking weight management programme, after successfully losing over three stone in just two years. Jessie Walker, from South Ipswich has described our ‘Alive ‘N’ Kicking’ programme as “brilliant” and is encouraging other young people who may have concerns about their weight, to take part in the free 12 week programme.

Jessie first began losing weight in 2011 after her mum Tina encouraged her to participate in the Activ8it Plus programme offered by the Ipswich Town Charitable Trust. After the twelve week course Jessie put some key changes in place but after a few months she wanted some more support and motivation with her longer term health goals. Tina then signed them both up for our free 12 week Alive ‘N’ Kicking programme.

The course, which ran from Body & Mind at Suffolk New Academy Sports Centre on Birkfield Drive, combined weekly activity sessions with interactive nutrition workshops about achieving weight loss goals. Jessie also took advantage of a free six week ‘Sportivate’ gym programme at Whitton Sports Centre, set up through the Live Well Suffolk and Suffolk Sport teams, which gave her the confidence and motivation to continue working towards her target.

Jessie said: “The Alive ‘N’ Kicking course was great; it was really inspiring and I loved it. It was great to be able to complete the course with my mum as we were able to motivate each other whilst making new friends with the other people on the course. It was definitely tough at first, but the team focused on small changes which made it more manageable.”

“The workshops made it easier to understand and I loved the physical activities, they were great fun. I definitely feel a lot happier and more confident now and think it was a brilliant course to get involved with.”

Since completing the Alive ‘N’ Kicking programme, Jessie and Tina have both continued to exercise and are now regular visitors to ‘Body & Mind’ where they participate in a variety of exercise classes.

Tina Walker said: “It is great to see the changes in Jessie, she has so much more confidence now and it has been good to do this together. Thanks to the Alive ‘N’ Kicking programme, we learnt a lot about how to make the right decisions when it comes to food, and we now really enjoy going to the gym. I would recommend it to anybody.”

Alive ‘N’ Kicking is a free 12-week course run by us to help children and young people (aged 2-18) and their families to successfully manage their weight and understand how to make positive choices to support a healthier lifestyle. The programme offers tailored initiatives for different age groups and combines physical activity sessions with interactive workshops which help participants understand about health and nutrition.
