Disappointment that plain packaging hasn’t been introduced for cigarettes
May 14th, 2013We believe that the UK Government has missed an opportunity to improve public health by not promoting the issue of standardised plain packaging for cigarettes.
We were disappointed that the issue was not mentioned in the Queen’s Speech last week, despite indications that Britain was to become the first European country to insist on standardised packaging.
Campaigners have long called for standardised plain packaging on cigarettes as it is believed it will prevent young children from starting smoking.
Steven Lee-Foster, Director of Live Well Suffolk said: “It is very disappointing that the issue of plain packaging has been pushed back. Although the government has said it is something they are still considering, we think they have missed a big opportunity to improve public health immediately.”
We offer free stop smoking clinics across the county to help support those looking to quit. Smokers can choose between group therapy or one-to-one sessions and may be eligible for up to £100 worth of medication (prescription charges may apply).
Over 4,000 Suffolk smokers quitted in 2012 with our help.
